ONE-LOVE
|
| |  : |
A Monument to Our Humanity,
Celebrating the Worlds Loving Response
to the Tsunami Disaster of Dec. 26, 2004.
I propose the sculpting of a large monument – ten feet tall – to be sculpted in plasterline clay over mesh and fiberglass reinforced FGR-95, supported by welded steel armature. Then, to be molded and cast into bronze and or concrete copies.
The base to be a four-foot tall, flat top concrete circle, holding water on its top, so the sculpture appears to be being pulled out of the water – with hidden lights illuminating the sculpture at night. On the perimeter of this base, all around it, will be a bass relief story board, visually telling the story - in a universal language - of the Tsunami Disaster and global relief efforts; all told with hands in various configurations and poses.
I propose to sculpt this monument with the assistance of a crew of a dozen or more artistic children of divorce, and other kids at risk, so the experience of co-creating this work may enhance their lives as well – a win, win, win situation.
A twelve-inch version of ONE-LOVE was also commissioned by Habitat for Humanity, of Sonoma County, CA and used as their “HELPING HAND” trophy for their “Outstanding Volunteer Award.”
Various size and material casts of ONE-LOVE will also be sold to help raise money for Tsunami & other global relief funds. The creation of the monument could only help facilitate the fund raising efforts - by then selling small replicas of the existing global monument, ONE-LOVE - © 2005, J. A. Olshan, Sebastopol, CA

Back
Sculpted in one twenty five hour sitting from memory, fourteen years posthumously. It is of the artist’s grandfather –Chiam Pinochus ‘Zady’ Feldzaman, who raised Ashi. He was the man who invented the first electric key-making machine, but did not know about patents, so sold it to a lock company who then patented it. The sculpture felt so much like his grandfather, that Ashi’s grandmother cried, his mother was afraid of it, and both Ashi’s brothers insisted on having bronze copies. Done in 1974, it was Ashi’s first finished bust of dozens to follow, and still his favorite. Available in bronze and other materials, along with photos of the original key-making machine.

INSIGHT
|
| |  : |
“Look within. Then look without, without
distraction from within.” Life size illusion.
Patina on FGR95. Sculpted as a labor of gratitude and love, from photos. Special mirror back allows the illusion of two full busts seated in wall niche, when it is actually just two half heads being reflected in mirror flush to wall. This new process, discovered by Ashi, Ashi calls MIRRORAGE, (© 2004, J.A. Olshan, Sebastopol, CA.) This process is also available as a special portrait style, which Ashi is available to sculpt of any subjects. As a prtrait of tweo people, this style would make a great wedding gift for the newly wed couple.
Photo is of Jack Kornfield, model for this work and mentor of Ashi’s, the teacher of Buddhism at Spirit Rock Meditation Center, Woodacre, CA. The sculpture’s title/message reflects what Ashi perceives as the essence of what Buddhism teaches us: ‘INSIGHT – LOOK WITHIN. THEN LOOK WITHOUT, WITHOUT DISTRACTION FROM WITHIN.”

CHILDHOOD PAINS - DIVORCE
|
| |  : |
Life size. Painted Hydrostone. Modeled for by Ashi’s nephew Eric Jay Stewart – age 10, this piece reflects the sadness, that both Ashi (as a child of divorce) and his nephew Eric experienced, as a result of their parents’ divorces. The six figures are about Ashi’s fading marriage, over a six-year period. The first figure was a conceptual piece, which Ashi sculpted of his wife, two-year old daughter (the binding link, as she hugs both their legs) and himself, in 1976, entitled, HUG.

CELEBRATE
|
| |  : |
As a labor of gratitude and love, this work reflects the teachings of one of Ashi’s mentors, Osho:
“See life as a celebration, celebrate it, …
not to look at life as a problem to be solved.”
- Osho
First sculpted with his hat on, in 1982, Ashi revised it
without the hat in 1995. Available in all materials and
with hat.

FANTASY
